The winter mountain environment provides a great alternative to traditional ski trips - these programmes produce lasting friendships, life-long memories and a great deal of fun along with experience that can influence future career choices.
We offer a 5-7 day course based in the beautiful Cairngorm National Park, suitable for all levels of ability – no experience needed, just enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved. From a comfortable bunkhouse base, our experienced instructor team guide you and your participants through the essential skills needed to operate in the hills in Winter before we head out on adventures to put these skills into practice.
A typical first day might involve getting fully kitted out before heading out to learn how to walk in crampons safely and efficiently, how to stop yourself if you slip by using your ice axe and which areas are safe to travel through to avoid avalanche threatened terrain.
The course is tailored to the needs and aspirations of your group and our plans each days are continuously reviewed to take these into account alongside the weather and prevailing conditions. The instructors leading your programme are experienced Mountain Leaders and Mountaineering Instructors (WML and MIC holders), the highest UK professional qualifications available. This means there is a great deal of flexibility in what you can do and with low instructor to student ratios, previous groups have reached summits, completed ice climbs and dug snow holes for overnight adventures.
Itineraries can include some or all of the following (weather and conditions dependent):
Dependent on the aspirations of individuals and school staff (both at the planning phase and during the course), your instructors can be flexible to include ice climbing options or longer mountain climbs. It's your trip and so your choice - build in a rest day or recovery afternoon if you'd like.
From £450.00 per person based on a 5-day programme.
Prices include: all instruction and guiding, arrival day/evening session, all accommodation costs (our base is a comfortable bunkhouse), food for the programme (as with Summer programmes, we supply the ingredients for breakfasts, packed lunches and a nutritious evening meal each evening along with menu cards for the group to cook with, instructors take a turn too!), hire of an ice axe and crampons for each participant, free use of any specialist equipment used (e.g. shovels, probes, ropes, harnesses, helmets, climbing hardwear).
You need to arrange: transport to/from the bunkhouse base and during the programme (we can arrange minibus hire in the local area along with D1 minibus drivers if you choose to fly to Inverness. Some schools choose to bring a school minibus and drive up to Scotland - whichever works best for you), personal kit for participants (we provide a comprehensive kit list and have stores of kit available for use/hire if needed).
Both of these are at the forefront of our planning - all of our programmes are designed to be as inclusive as possible and we offer bursaries each year to participants joining Summer Mountain Experiences who might not otherwise be able to take part.
Please get in touch for more information - we would love to hear from you if we can support any of your participants.
