What does 'not for profit' mean?
Being not for profit means that any 'operating surplus' that AE has each year is not paid out in profits like a standard company, it is used to pursue our organisation aim of widening participation in the outdoors for young people.
Since 2016, AE has supported young people, leaders, teachers, schools and organisations providing outdoor opportunities with bursaries, awards, training, equipment, guidance and on-the-ground man hours as part of this aim.
Below are the annual projects that we get involved with as a staff team or organisation as part of being a not for profit. If you'd like to get involved in our not for profit activities or have an idea for a project that we could engage with, do let us know.

Charity challenge
Each year, AE works with a chosen charity to arrange a challenge or event. From sponsored zip wires, to day treks, summits, climbs and abseils, AE designs, plans, manages and delivers the event on the ground free of charge. All those taking part on behalf of the charity gain sponsorship and all proceeds go directly to the charity without any costs for the event taking place.
If you are or know of a charity that would like to work with us this year, please apply using the application form below. Closing date for applications is 30th June each year with the event to be run in the Autumn of the same year.
We have a lot of fun running these events and we'd love you to join us to help support some worthwhile charities too.

Conserving and clearing
Conserving, protecting and being mindful of the natural world around us are important messages for us to bring to our work with young people in the outdoors. Between our core staff team, AE dedicates 14 working days to the following as are needed most during any given year:
- Clearing litter and fly tipping - there has been a significant rise in both litter and fly tipping and we support the work of local National Park organisations in clearing and disposing of waste left by others;
- Repairing, clearing and building - helping to maintain the local environment through different projects such as footpath restoration, repairing dry stone walls and clearing back invasive species such as rhododendrons;
- Observing and surveying - local flora and fauna populations can be impacted in a range of different ways by local and visitor populations to the Peak District National park (with 13.25 million visitors reported in 2018!) and being part of regular initiatives to observe and survey flora and fauna plays a vital role in conserving and protecting it.

Inspiring the Future

Inspiring the Future connects schools and colleges with volunteers from a range of professions and sectors that match the school/college requirements in talking about the world of work, jobs and career paths.
Members of the AE staff team are available to talk about their jobs, careers and what led them here (either in person or virtually). Our team has a diverse range of backgrounds that led them to work in the outdoors including teaching, ecology, law, mountain guiding, marketing, events and running businesses. Inspiring young people is a fundamental part of our everyday work and we welcome the opportunity to connect with pupils of all ages.

Surveying and protecting
Making observations and surveying flora and fauna are integral to helping to conserve and protect habitats and species. With a huge number of visitors to the Peak District National Park each year it is important to monitor flora and fauna in order to ensure its survival and conditions so that it can thrive as best as possible.
Each year, the AE team conduct and participate in a range of observations and surveys to help monitor wildlife within the Peak District National Park. If you join us on a Wildlife & Conservation activity day or residential then you may be part of observations and surveys too - time of year dependant!
