Adventure Expeditions runs lots of different Residentials throughout the year based around specific activities. All of our Open Residentials that we run meet the requirements for the Gold DofE Residential section, but they are also available for people not enrolled in their DofE to enjoy. Unless specified, all of our Residentials are based in bunkhouses, and your evening activities will consist of taking it in turns in small groups to cook each evening, and socialising with your fellow participants with team games. We are also able to create Tailor-Made Residentials for groups and schools.
Outdoor Activities
Our Outdoor Activities Residentials are based in the Peak District and start and finish at Hathersage Station. This Residential gives you the chance to experience a wide range of activities which may include: Rock Climbing, Canoeing, Weaselling, Bouldering, Caving, Orienteering or Scrambling. This is a great opportunity for those who wish to try their hand at lots of different outdoor activities you may not have had a chance to experience in the past.
Rock Climbing
Our Rock Climbing Residentials are also based in the Peak District and start at Hathersage Station. With the world class crags of the Peak District on the doorstep of your bunkhouse, you’ll spend the week experiencing different styles of climbing such as bouldering, sport climbing, traditional climbing and abseiling. There will be plenty of chances for development during the week, and we can tailor the activities to suit what the group would like to focus on. This is a great opportunity for those with little to no experience of outdoor climbing and want to try this out, and also great for indoor climbers with not much experience out on the rock.
Advanced Rock Climbing
Again based in the Peak District, our Advanced Rock Climbing Residentials are designed for those with prior climbing experience and really want to develop those skills. The instructor to participant ratio is smaller, which means you’ll get more time with your instructor, and they’ll also be qualified to a minimum of RCDI / MCI level, meaning we can try more activities. It is a great option for those wishing to develop their climbing skills, and a great follow on from our standard Rock Climbing Residentials.
Wildlife & Conservation
We run our Wildlife & Conservation Residentials both in the Peak District and on the Isle of Arran, and during the week you will work towards the newly relaunched John Muir Discovery Award for 2025. You will discover your chosen locations plant species, wildlife and habitat, and also help the National Trust and Arran Rangers respectively on existing conservation and science projects. One evening you will also go on a night walk to look for nocturnal wildlife such as bats, badgers and newts. This is a great opportunity for anybody with a passion for Wildlife, and informative for those doing something similar in education.
Landscape & Adventure Photography
New for 2024, our Landscape & Adventure Photography Residentials were a great success, with lots of positive feedback from participants and instructors alike. We will now be running these in the Peak District, Lake District and Eryri (Snowdonia) across the year. You will try your hand at different photography techniques, and experiment with composition, natural light, sunsets and low-light photography. Each evening you will get a chance to edit the photos you’ve taken during the day, learning how to use specific software. This is a great opportunity for both beginners who’d like to learn the basics, and also those who are doing something media based in education.
Bushcraft & Wilderness Skills
Again new for 2024, our Bushcraft & Wilderness Skills Residential was a great success with lots of positive feedback from participants and instructors alike. Our Bushcraft Residentials are based in West Yorkshire on the Harewood Estate, close to the set of Emmerdale. The aim of the week is to become at home in the woods, becoming more and more self-sufficient as the week progresses, using materials and resources found in the woods. You will set up your basecamp, build natural shelters, learn fire lighting skills, using natural materials to make a comfortable bed, process water to make it safe to drink, and make a ground oven for a big feast on the last night. On the final day you will deconstruct camp and leave no trace. This is a great opportunity for those wishing to develop their independence and transferable skills.
Winter & Mountain Skills
We run our Winter & Mountain Skills Residential each year in the February half term up in the Cairngorms, starting and finishing at Aviemore Station. Over the course of the week you’ll develop your skills to efficiently travel in winter conditions, looking at navigation, footwork, the use of ice axes, taking this knowledge into a winter scrambling day. You will also learn about avalanche awareness and emergency procedures on the hill. If conditions allow, we will also build snow shelters and potentially cook inside a snow hole, or have a brew in an igloo. This is a great opportunity for those wishing to develop their skills in the mountains in winter conditions.
