A Dream Adventure
An adventurous journey was requested for October 2022. This is always an exciting opportunity for Adventure Expeditions to make a dream a reality. We decided to go to Scotland and paddle a canoe on the famous Loch Ness! The team consisted of 17 Young Adults, 3 Teachers, 3 Freelance Canoe instructors, and 3 Adventure Expeditions Core Team Staff. There were 2 paddlers in each canoe - that’s a lot of boats!

Day 1
The fresh team met for the first time in the very accommodating Great Glen hostel in Laggan. Straight away we were all on Loch Lochy in the canoes. The afternoon was dedicated to learning new skills with the paddle, safety procedures, and also what to do if the canoe capsizes! After a fine dinner of local cuisine made by our wonderful host Vicky, the hostel was a hive of activity. This was as we all began to pack everything we needed for a canoe expedition into a large dry bag (which was waterproof!).
Day 2
We canoed from Loch Oich, along the Caledonian Canal all the way to Loch Ness. It is the largest lake in the UK, especially when viewed from a canoe. Some students did keep an eye out for the Loch Ness Monster! The entire journey of paddling was an impressive 30km long. The team enjoyed a wild camp one night, cooking on stoves by the Loch shore, then under the dark starry sky, we had a fire- with marshmallows of course!
Day 3
We exited the canoes in Foyers and continued our expedition to Dores on foot. We visited the huge Foyers Falls. After a hilly 18km hike along the remainder of Loch Ness, everyone could truly appreciate the vastness of Loch Ness. What a view. The hike finished in the splendid Dores Inn, right on the sandy shore of Loch Ness. We all enjoyed a traditional Scottish dinner. With such an appetite, the only time the team was quiet was whilst tucking into their burger, haggis, or mac n cheese!
A trip to remember
Although everyone was tired after such a feat of physical and mental endurance, they were also proud to have gone from zero to hero in paddling a canoe. The whole team really bonded, and had fun that they would remember forever.
